CELEBRITY DJ REVEALS HIS SHOCKING STATUS

Kilama Joel Opiyo, aka DJ Joel Fresh, is no stranger to the spotlight—or the bass drop. Born on November 30, 1995, Joel has spent the last decade living the highs and lows of the DJ life, earning his stripes as one of Uganda’s most electrifying selectors. Whether spinning in the sweltering heat of Northern Uganda or the neon glow of Kampala’s clubs, Joel has seen it all: the glory, the grind, and a whole lot of questionable dance moves.
“Joel is like the city’s anthem—you just can’t miss him,” one fan jokes. “If he’s not at one spot, he’s at the other two!” He is also a strong pillar in the Podium Djz Uganda Movement!

In a week, it’s almost impossible not to hear that DJ Joel Fresh is either at Password Lounge, Green Apple, or Masaki, spinning tracks and electrifying the city with his infectious energy. Whether it’s a Friday night party, a Saturday celebration, or the legendary Sunday Celebrity Night at Password, DJ Joel has become a staple of Gulu’s vibrant nightlife.

As he gears up for his 10-Year Anniversary Concert on December 20th at Password Lounge Gulu, Joel’s taking us on a wild ride through his career. And if you thought being a DJ was all fame and free drinks, buckle up—this story’s got more twists than his party mixes.

Mixing Beats, Dodging Drinks

“DJ! This one’s on me!”—a line every DJ knows too well. For Joel, the phrase is as common as song requests, often accompanied by an over-enthusiastic fan holding a drink. “It’s like they think I have the liver of a rhino,” Joel laughs. “If I drank everything people offered me, the only thing I’d be spinning now is my hospital bed!”

So, what’s his secret? “Fake sipping,” Joel confesses. “You smile, you nod, you pretend to drink. Works like a charm. Meanwhile, the mix stays tight, and the night goes on.” Of course, it’s not just drinks. Joel has dodged plenty of strange requests too. “One guy asked me to play his wedding song at a club. I told him, ‘Bro, your vows don’t slap in this setting.’ “Meanwhile, a couple of ladies once in a while pick his number and immediately would like to go with him home at the end of the night.

Ladies, Laughter, and a Little Trouble

Ah, the DJ booth—the ultimate people magnet. For Joel, it’s not just a workplace; it’s also where the drama unfolds. “You get all kinds,” he says with a grin. “One lady once slid me her number on a napkin with the words ‘Make me your favorite track.’ I nearly dropped the bass from laughing.”

But it’s not all fun and games. Fame brings challenges, especially when you’re working in nightlife. “People forget DJs have feelings too. We’re not just jukeboxes with legs,” Joel quips. “Balancing personal life with the craziness of the club scene? Let’s just say it’s been a mix more complex than my remixes.”

From Gulu to Kampala: The DJ Diaries

Joel’s career began humbly, spinning at local gigs in Gulu. “My first setup was basically a laptop, a borrowed mixer, and a prayer,” he jokes. Fast forward to today, and he’s graced stages at NTV, Urban TV, and more. “People think DJs have it easy, but trust me, the hustle is real. I’ve had gigs where the crowd was two people and a goat. Still nailed it, though.”

As much as he enjoys the limelight, Joel doesn’t shy away from the struggles. “The Northern Uganda entertainment scene doesn’t always get the support it deserves,” he says. “But that’s what keeps me going—putting Gulu on the map one beat at a time.”

The Ribbon and the Reveal

This year, Joel’s 10-year milestone isn’t just about music; it’s about making a difference. The theme, “We Are the Ribbon, No Stigma,” ties in with his passion for creating awareness around HIV/AIDS. With World AIDS Day on December 1st, Joel is inviting organizations like USAID and TASO to use his event as a platform for education and empowerment.

But wait—there’s more. Joel is dropping a bombshell at the concert: his own HIV status. “It’s time to be real with my fans,” he says. “If I can use my story to inspire even one person, it’s worth it.”

Joel’s decision to reveal his status isn’t just brave—it’s groundbreaking. “Music connects people, but truth changes lives,” he says. “I’ve spent 10 years making people dance. Now, I want to make them think and be responsible.”

An Invitation to Remember

As Joel looks back on his journey, he’s filled with gratitude. “To my fans, my friends, and even the guy who requested Cuke Dong Pe at a wedding—thank you. You’re all part of my story.”

On December 20th, Password Lounge Gulu will come alive with beats, stories, and a message that matters. Joel’s inviting everyone—fans, skeptics, and the curious—to join the celebration. “Come for the music, stay for the movement,” he says.

So, mark your calendars and polish your dance moves. With DJ Joel Fresh at the helm, this isn’t just a concert—it’s a night to remember. And who knows? You might even walk away with a story of your own to tell.
